CONTROL ROOM

A control room (or operations center) is a room that serves as a central control and monitor station for security, safety, building and other types of systems of a large physical facility or area. The physical facilities can be spread out over multi-sites, cities, countries or even worldwide. In some cases, the control can be part of a larger command center (especially in military organizations).

Control rooms are vital for organizations to efficiently and effectively monitor multiple information streams and make accurate mission-critical decisions. With an ever-increasing number of content sources and applications to manage, in addition to collaborative information integration needs, today’s control rooms need to enable system management that is efficient and cost-effective, while at the same time offering maximum operator comfort.

Whether it’s for monitoring, decision-making, responding, controlling, collaborating, or communicating, control room solutions are an essential component to daily operations, allowing for more efficient work and better decision-making.

A control room is typically made up of one or more desks, together with a video wall. The video wall is placed in the room in a way that enables all operators to have a clear view of every screen on it. Ideally, the video wall is not placed too high, to enable the operators to check the video wall without having to sprain their neck. The last one is not a joke, in a control room, ergonomics are of great importance. The operators need to do their jobs efficiently, without having much distractions.

A control room is generally the most secured room of an organization. They are not accessible by the general public, but only by authorized personnel. In a control room all systems that have to be controlled, monitored and managed are connected to a wide range of technological equipment. A widely used term for the management of these systems is PSIM (Physical Security Information Management).

The operators in the control room are able to control and monitor these systems via a central management software platform. The key benefit of connecting physical systems to a central software tool, is the centralization capability. Whereas many of the physical systems would in the past be placed in buildings without a central connection, they could only be controlled via personnel on the grounds. This vastly time and cost consuming operation works very inefficiently, especially in a crisis situation when every second counts.

Another key benefit of a control room is the maximized situational awareness. For large organisations, the control room operators are not familiar with all the buildings of the organization. The pre-defined procedures, quick access to CCTV systems and so on, enables the operators to quickly have a thorough understanding of every situation, without leaving their chair.
